An acquaintance passed along this article about reading statistics and it made me sad to see the majority of folks don’t read. These are a few things that stuck out to me.
33% of high school graduates never read a book after their high school years.
42% of college graduates never read a book after their colleges years.
80% of families did not buy a book within the last year.
I know statistics can be interpreted in a variety of ways and there are no particulars on the size of the survey, this is alarming and has to make you wonder why do the majority of folks don’t read?
Based on what I have seen, they are a variety of reasons for this.
For starters, adulthood.
As kids we used to read to learn about new things and to let our imagination go wild. As we get older, the majority of us lose this desire for one reason or another.
Maybe it is their job or hectic family schedule that leaves them little down time to spend some time reading.
As for those who do read, I think some non-readers are afraid to step out of their comfort zone.Maybe their favorite author from high school has stopped writing or they only prefer a certain genre.
It can be downright intimidating looking for a new book. There are so many of them out there, how do they choose? Once they get burned by a bad book, it may take awhile to go back.
The last reason I see why the majority of people don’t read isn’t technology itself but rather how things are delivered. How many times have you heard it is easier to watch a movie than read a book.
Hopefully this trend starts to turn around in a positive direction and we will see where the majority of people read rather than do not.
